„Träume von Liebe, Küssen und Umarmungen“

Alexandra Müller

Pages 303 - 330

The present paper examines the dream motif in intertextual, pictorial and dramatic transpositions of Longus’ ‚Daphnis and Chloe‘ from the 18th to the 20th century. Adaptations by, for instance, Marcel Schwob, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, Marc Chagall, Pierre Bonnard or Michel Fokine modify the oneiric imagery of the ancient hypotext in order to modernise their source material by reflecting paradigmatic changes in regards to social ‚mores‘, cultural believes and aesthetic propositions. The artistic representations of Daphnis’ und Chloe’s dreams, moreover, illustrate the shifting perception towards the concept of dreaming.
