Seasteading Beitrag

Schreibszene und Gesetzgeber im Kontext maritimer Gründungsprojekte

Friedrich Balke

Comparatio, Volume 11 (2019), Issue 1, Page 87 - 107

‚Seasteading‘ is the generic term for projects of creating extraterritorial communities at sea, in international waters. Discussed primarily in the United States, but also in Europe in contexts of libertarian and communitarian groups, ‚Seasteading‘, in its political core, aims at not being thus governed or at being governed in another way. Under the conditions of contemporary technology and media, ‚Seasteading‘ gives rise to a renewal of the conflict between a political rhetoric of emancipation and a governmental casuistic of foundation referring back to Rousseau’s ‚Social Contract‘. Bringing about the foundation then comprises a political and normative as well as a technological and infrastructural operation. Whereas for Rousseau this achievement took shape in the model of the island and by the hand of a single mythical hero, in the ‚Seasteading‘ discourse the act of foundation is distributed over a multitude of founders in whose attempts the pathos of the renewed political beginning is joined to the minute technical planning of ‚floating cities‘ or ‚floating nations‘.

Ähnlichkeit und Entstellung. Mindere Mimesis und maßgebender Anblick bei Platon und Walter Benjamin Beitrag

Friedrich Balke

Comparatio, Volume 7 (2015), Issue 2, Page 261 - 283

Mimesis originally does not signify the imitation of things or actions, but refers to a representation in a dancing performance accompanied by song and music. Before Plato judged it according to its adequacy to ideas, it functioned as a fundamental medium of changing the self and becoming another in the context of religious cults. The article inquires into the continuing influence of a mimesis aiming at self-transformation under the conditions of the paradigm of ‘imitatio’. As will become evident, Plato’s rejection of unlimited mimesis is based on the distinction of objects worthy or unworthy of representation which results in the formation of a ‘minor mimesis’. In the twentieth century the anthropologization of mimesis as a human faculty, which Aristotle already referred to in his theory of learning, is seized by Walter Benjamin and defended against its pedagogical instrumentalization. With reference to selected passages of Benjamin’s ‘Berlin Childhood around 1900’ the article illuminates in how far the hyper-mimetic compulsion towards similitude realizes the very moment of ecstatic selftransformation, which is characteristic of the original mimesis, as a complete assimilation to another or as a form of self-concealment.
