Dans le présent article nous explorons le potentiel conceptuel d’une figure qui, depuis ses origines dans le langage topique de l’antiquité grecque et latine, a permis de penser et d’exprimer le projet d’une rénovation radicale: la table rase. Faire table rase – cela veut dire se défaire et dégager de tout ce qui a été transmis par la tradition, de jeter par-dessus bord tout ce que l’on a adopté, présupposé ou considéré comme allant de soi précédemment, pour recommencer à zéro sur une surface blanche et vierge. Cependant, l’image de la table rase ne se prête pas seulement à désigner le projet de rénovation d’un sujet individuel, mais s’applique de même aux desseins de fondation collective. Ainsi, dans l’essai « Expérience et pauvreté » de Walter Benjamin cette figure devient l’emblème d’un recommencement radical qui du même coup ouvre tout un espace nouveau de possibilités technologiques encore inexplorées. Enfin, la table se révèle être une figure de passage entre le réel et le virtuel.

The article explores the conceptual potential of a figure which – since its origins in a ‚topos‘ of Greek and Roman antiquity – has served as a means to imagine and articulate the project of a radical renovation: the tabula rasa, the clear table. Clearing the table – this means to dispense with and free oneself from all that has been passed on by tradition, to throw over board everything one has accepted, presupposed or taken for granted to make an unprecedented new beginning on the blank and pristine surface of a cleared table. The image of the clear table, however, does not merely refer to an individual’s decision to radically renew her or his life or to take up an unprecedented project. It equally offers itself as an emblem of a collective enterprise. Thus, in Walter Benjamin’s essay „Experience and poverty“ we encounter the notion of radical renewal as a collective enterprise which at the same time opens up a new space of hitherto unexplored technological possibilities. Finally the table reveals itself as a figure of transition between the real and the virtual.
