Roland Barthes’ „The Preparation of the Novel“ establishes a dynamic concept of genre and reconnects it with the subject’s genesis. For Barthes, the subject’s desire is realized in the interlacing of imagination, intentions to form and notation (‚ecriture‘). The concept of ‚fantasme d’écriture‘ should be considered further in the narratological discussion, more emphasis has to be laid on the media qualities of this concept which seem underestimated in Barthes’ „Writing Degree Zero“ and „The Preparation of the Novel“.
