Using the example of Mela Hartwig’s ‘Bin ich ein überflüssiger Mensch’ and Sylvia Plath’s ‘The Bell Jar’, the article discusses and explores a certain sub-genre of the modernist novel. This sub-genre mainly revolves around female depression and melancholy. From the beginning of the 20th century until now, a series of very similar novels has been published by various female authors using their biographical experiences to create a first-person narrative about pathological sadness, mental illness and failed integration into society. The “female depression novel” persists beyond the ever-changing literary fashions and styles.

En utilisant l’exemple du roman ‚Bin ich ein überflüssiger Mensch‘ de Mela Hartwig et de ‚The Bell Jar‘ de Sylvia Plath l’article discute et explore un certain sub-genre du roman moderniste. Principalement ce sub-genre traite la dépression et la mélancolie féminines. Depuis le commencement du XXe siècle à aujourd’hui une série des romans très similaires a été publiée par des femmes écrivains en utilisant leurs expériences biographiques pour créer une narration sur la tristesse pathologique. Le roman sur la dépression féminine subsiste bien que les modes et les styles littéraires se transforment toujours.
