The following article examines the presence of Greek and Roman traditions in the European literatures and their formative role for the development of poetry and poetical theory in the post-medieval centuries. It retraces the Mediterranean origins and their enduring impact on European cultures, which manifests itself in written documents for more than 2000 years.
